Standard for the use of nutritional fortifiers

1 Range

This standard specifies the main purpose of food nutrition fortification, the requirements for the use of nutritional fortification agents, the requirements for the selection of food types that can be fortified, and the provisions for the use of nutritional fortification agents.

This standard is applicable to the use of nutritional fortifiers in food. Except as otherwise provided by national laws, regulations and (or) standards.

2 Terms and definitions

2.1 Nutritional fortifier

Natural or synthetic nutrients and other nutrients added to food in order to increase its nutritional content (value).

2.2 Nutrients

Food has a specific physiological role, can maintain the body's growth, development, activity, reproduction and normal metabolism of the substance, including protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and so on.

2.3 Other nutrients

Food components other than nutrients that have nutritional and/or physiological functions.

2.4 Special dietary foods

Foods specially processed or formulated to meet special physical or physiological conditions and/or to meet special dietary needs in cases of disease, disorder, etc. The content of nutrients and/or other nutrients in such foods is significantly different from that of comparable ordinary foods.

3. The main purpose of nutritional fortification

3.1 Make up for the loss of nutrients caused by normal processing and storage of food.

3.2 Within a certain geographical range, there are a considerable number of people with low intake or deficiency of certain nutrients, and the health effects caused by their low intake or deficiency can be improved through fortification.

3.3 Certain populations may have low or deficient intakes of certain nutrients due to dietary habits and/or other reasons, and the health effects of low or deficient intakes can be ameliorated through fortification.

3.4 Supplement and adjust the content of nutrients and/or other nutrients in foods for special diets.

4 Requirements for the use of nutritional supplements

4.1 The use of nutrition fortifiers should not lead to excessive or unbalanced intake of nutrients and other nutrients after consumption, and should not lead to abnormal metabolism of any nutrients and other nutrients.

4.2 The use of nutritional supplements should not encourage and guide food consumption patterns contrary to national nutrition policies.

4.3 Nutritional supplements added to food should be able to maintain a stable quality under specific storage, transport and consumption conditions.

4.4 Nutritional supplements added to food should not cause significant adverse changes in the general characteristics of food such as color, taste, odor, cooking characteristics, etc.

4.5 Consumers should not be misled or deceived by the use of nutritional supplements to exaggerate the content or role of a certain nutrient in the food.

5 Can reinforce the selection requirements of food categories

5.1 Foods commonly consumed and easily accessible by the target population should be selected for fortification.

5.2 Food consumption as a fortification carrier should be relatively stable.

5.3 The food advocated to reduce consumption in the dietary guidelines for Chinese residents should not be used as a carrier of fortification.

6 Rules for the use of nutritional fortifiers

6.1 The scope and amount of nutrition fortifier used in food should meet the requirements of Appendix A, and the sources of permitted compounds should meet the requirements of Appendix B.

6.2 The content of nutrients and other nutritional components in special dietary foods shall be carried out in accordance with the corresponding national food safety standards, and the sources of nutritional fortifiers and compounds allowed shall meet the requirements of Appendix C of this standard and (or) the corresponding product standards.

7 Food category (name) description

The food category (name) description is used to define the scope of use of nutritional fortifiers and is only applicable to this standard, see Appendix D. If a nutritional fortification agent is allowed to be applied to a food category (name), it is allowed to be applied to all food categories under that category, unless otherwise specified.

8 Quality standard of nutritional fortifier

The source of nutrient fortifier compounds used in accordance with this standard shall meet the corresponding quality specifications
